Inspirational Travel Quotes

Inspirational Travel Quotes

I am currently reading The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twainthe pre-curser to all travel blogs, albeit non-digital (unless you get it on a Kindle, I suppose). I came across the following quote, which inspired me to put together a small list of my favourite travel quotes by seminal figures of literary past:

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” [Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad]

Actually the quote I can absolutely relate to, albeit a little negative, is by Aldous Huxley:

“For the born traveller, travelling is a besetting vice. Like other vices, it is imperious, demanding its victim’s time, money, energy and the sacrifice of comfort.”

And the reason why I publish my travel blog:

“I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read on the train.” – Oscar Wilde.

Just kidding, but this comment made me chuckle quite a lot!

One of my favourite things to discover throughout my travels are different types of flowers! Here is aster that I came across whilst out in the Scottish Highlands.

Now, for my ten inspirational travel quotes…

“The world is a book and those who do not travel only read one page” – St Augustine

“There are no foreign lands. It is the traveller only who is foreign” – Robert Louis Stevenson

“To travel is to live” – Hans Christensen Andersen

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t learn. So throw off the bowliness, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover” – Mark Twain.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes” – Marcel Proust

“It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters, not the end” – Ernest Hemingway

“Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world” – Gustave Flaubert

“I dislike feeling at home when I am abroad” – George Bernard Shaw

“Not all those who wander are lost” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

“Travel and change of place impart new vigour on the mind” – Seneca

One of the coolest travel quotes that I recently stumbled upon is: “We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” I think it’s absolutely lovely and completely true! It’s a shame I can’t find who these words belong to.
